We design

Spaces

Some are
lived in

others are
listened to

Some things exist only once.

A place we bring back to life comes from a story that never repeats itself, from a light that falls just so at that hour, from a community that lives in that space and would live nowhere else. When a project ends, what remains is not only what we have built. It is also what we have left empty: the distance between two walls, the hour when a room falls into shadow, the silence of a house before anyone walks in. In Japanese that emptiness has a name

Ma

and the same word is used for the pause between two notes. We didn’t discover it. But ma is the reason, at a certain point, we started making music.

A space isn’t finished when the walls are finished. You only truly understand a place when someone walks into it, when the light shifts through the day, when you hear it resonate. Designing these spaces, we found we wanted to listen to them.

So we began bringing musicians to the places where we are working. Not to illustrate a building, not to lay a soundtrack over it: so they could stay as long as it takes and write down what they heard. With no constraints, without knowing in advance what would come of it.

What comes out is also pressed on vinyl. Sound waves cut into matter: you choose the record, lower the needle, and stay there listening. Like a house, it outlasts the person who made it.

In the end we always do the same thing: look at emptiness, imagine what could be there, and make it exist.
